However, particle size should never be reviewed as a single number without context. Distribution, stability, testing method, sample preparation, and finished-product compatibility also matter.
What is particle size?
Particle size describes the approximate diameter of droplets, micelles, capsules, or other structures inside a delivery system. At the nanoscale, these structures are measured in nanometers.
One nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. Because nano structures cannot be seen with the unaided eye, specialized instruments are required to evaluate their size and distribution.

Why smaller particles can improve dispersion
When an active ingredient is divided into smaller delivery structures, the system can distribute more evenly throughout a compatible formulation. Smaller structures also create greater total surface area compared with the same quantity of material held in larger droplets.
In practical formulation work, this may support:
- Improved water compatibility
- More consistent active distribution
- Reduced visible separation
- Cleaner product appearance
- Improved repeatability during manufacturing
Smaller does not automatically mean better in every situation. The delivery system must also remain stable, compatible with the product matrix, and appropriate for the intended processing conditions.
What is particle-size distribution?
Particle-size distribution describes the range of particle sizes present in a sample. A formulation may have a small average particle size while still containing a broad range of larger and smaller structures.
A narrow distribution generally indicates a more uniform system. A broad distribution may suggest that some droplets are much larger than others, which can affect appearance, stability, and consistency.
What does PDI mean?
PDI, or polydispersity index, is a measurement commonly used to describe the uniformity of a particle population. Lower values generally indicate a narrower and more consistent distribution, while higher values indicate greater variation.
PDI should be interpreted alongside average particle size, formulation composition, storage conditions, and the testing method used.
Not every emulsion marketed as nano is the same
The word “nano” is sometimes used broadly. Some products may contain structures that are too large, too widely distributed, or insufficiently stable to deliver the expected formulation benefits.
Product developers should request appropriate technical documentation and ask questions such as:
- What testing method was used?
- What is the reported average particle size?
- What is the particle-size distribution?
- Was the sample diluted before testing?
- How does the system perform over time?
- Has it been tested in the intended product application?
Particle size and finished-product stability
Particle size can influence whether a formulation remains visually uniform or begins to cream, settle, aggregate, or separate. Temperature changes, pH, ionic strength, processing shear, preservatives, and other ingredients may alter the delivery system after it is added to the finished product.
Stability testing should therefore include the complete formulation under expected storage and distribution conditions.
